In commemoration of the 2018 World Toilet Day, the Wife of Ogun State Governor and President, UPLIFT Development Foundation (UDF), Mrs. Olufunso Amosun has harped on the need for a clean and safe environment in market places, to prevent outbreak of unavoidable sicknesses and diseases.
Speaking during the commissioning of the UPLIFT Development Foundation blocks of toilet located at Panseke, Lafenwa and Adatan Markets in Abeokuta, Mrs. Amosun noted that when environments are kept clean, outbreak such as; Malaria, cholera, diarrhoea, dysentery and skin rashes could be prevented.
“We are here to observe the United Nations 2018 World Toilet Day, a day set aside for everyone to maintain good personal hygiene and live a healthy life style, because health is wealth. We need to have clean toilet facilities and stop defecating all around our environment. This is why the UPLIFT Development Foundation has deemed it fit to provide modern toilet facilities in our communities and market places.” She submitted.
She enjoined other stakeholders and well meaning Nigerians to join hands with government to improve quality of lives of the people by investing in facilities that would have positive impact on the people and the environment, urging the market people to take good care of the facilities by cleaning them regularly.
She added that the state of the surroundings in the three market places necessitated the actions of UDF to construct the toilet facilities for the people, expressing her joy over the promises of the Iyalojas and babalojas of the makers to always ensure the cleanliness of the toilet facilities.
In his remark, the State Commissioner for Environment, Hon. Bolaji Oyeleye, noted that the construction of the toilet facilities was in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal, saying the efforts of the Wife of the Governor in providing the facilities was a good way of complementing the work of the State government.
He appreciated UDF in its bid to improve the environment and promoting a healthy living for the people of the State, adding that government would continue to do its best to make life meaningful for the less privileged in the society.
Welcoming guest at the flag-off ceremony, Chairman of Abeokuta South West Local Government Development Area (LCDA) Hon. Tajudeen Jimoh commended the gesture, noting that, ‘’lot of people around the world had no access to toilet thereby defecating in open places and this act is harmful and must be stopped’’.
He implored the people to always ensure a clean and healthy environment, saying, ‘’a healthy nation is a wealthy nation’’.
