Nigerian women have been charged to play active role in politics at the grassroots level, in order to secure the 35 percent demand space provided in the political system of the nation.
Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Hon. Afolabi Afuape gave the charge while receiving 100 Women Lobby Group, Ogun State chapter at Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, saying women’s challenges to participate in active politics hinged on religion, environment and value system of the country, called on menfolks to support women involvement in politics.
“No political party will be looking for women to be members of its political team without her previous involvement in the political exercise. It will be difficult to just handpick any woman who has no interest in politics”, Afuape said.
He assured the group of his support in the area of training and advocacy programmes, whenever the need arises.
In her remarks, the State Group Coordinator, Prof. Olubunmi Ashimolowo called for genuine backing for women in elective position at all levels, instead of appointment positions, noting that only 13 percent are currently in elective position in the country.
