Ogun State Government has vowed to pursue a more orderly developed town planning initiative, conducive for corporate and individual prosperity as it would leave no stone unturned in invoking and enforcing necessary regulations checkmating haphazard developments that often result to loss of lives, property and resources.
Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Tpl. Olatunji Odunlami stated this at a programme commemorating the World Habitat Day at the Obas’ Complex, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, maintaining that the State was committed to providing smart and affordable housing for all.
The Commissioner said defective buildings would soon become a thing of the past, as the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development had resolved to tackle housing deficiencies in the State.
Delivering keynote address titled, ‘’Housing as A Catalyst for Individual Prosperity’’, Esv. Salmon Shobanke suggested that land administration system should be redesigned to minimise the time taken and huge cost involved in processing land titles, such as Certificate of Occupancy (CofO), Governor’s Letters of Consent to assign, among others.
The Surveyor also advised various planning authorities and institutions to be more functional, while appropriate, adequate manpower and resources should be deployed to reduce time taken in getting planning approvals, noting that housing finance mechanism should be made robust through virile mortgage system.
Another Discussant, the Managing Director, Gateway Mortgage Bank, Mr. Wale Osisanya who spoke on ‘’Mortgage Facilities: How Accessible?’’ said housing delivery played critical role in nation building and welfare of the people, describing the sector as one which directly impacts not only on the citizens but the performance of other sectors of the economy.
The Bank MD, added that decent and affordable housing remained ‘’one of the basic needs of individual, family and community at large being a prerequisite to the survival of man, housing ranks second to food’’.
Osisanya pointed out steps in accessing mortgage facility in the State to include, guaranteed source of repayment, opening of account, prequalification of the customer to determine affordability for the duration of the loan based on the source of repayment, type of property individual could go for, among others.
