The Ogun State Government says it would not relent at safeguarding the oil rich Tongeji Island in Ipokia Local Government Area of the State, especially now that the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), has confirmed the presence of petroleum and gas in commercial quantity on the Island.
The State Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, who stated this while receiving the Flag Officer Commanding, Western Naval Command, Rear Admiral Sag Abbah at his office, Oke Mosan, Abeokuta, said the State government had received a letter from the NNPC confirming the availability of large quantity of oil and gas in the area.
Governor Amosun while appreciating security agencies for working tirelessly at maintaining peace and order in the country, especially in the North Eastern part of the country, promised that his administration would continue to support them in carrying out their constitutional responsibilities.
He challenged the Nigerian Navy not to relent at securing the nation’s waterways, assuring them of more government’s physical presence, especially on the Island.
In his remark, Rear Admiral Sag Abbah, said the Navy would partner government at maintaining peace and order in the State, advocating for more government presence at the Tongeji Island.
