Wife of the Ogun State Governor, Mrs. Bamidele Abiodun has described tourism as a veritable avenue for job creation and revenue generation in many countries and should be properly harnessed in Nigeria.
Speaking at the World Tourism Day celebration, held at the June 12 Cultural Center, Kuto, Abeokuta, Mrs. Abiodun stated that tourism has been known to generate 10 percent of the world’s jobs, adding that a country that wished to develop must prioritize its tourism.
According to her, “any country that wishes to vigorously pursue development and strengthen its image must, as a matter of urgency, continue to prioritize and encourage tourism”, suggesting tourism skills be taught in schools.
The First Lady, who noted that her office would through tourism, create jobs for women and youths in the State, said, “for us at the office of the first lady, we will continue to work round the clock to promote tourism potentials in Ogun State. This will go a long way to create job opportunities for our young people”.
The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Culture and Tourism, Alhaja Selimot Ottun, earlier in her welcome address, called on stakeholders in tourism to join hands in promoting and maximising every form of tourism potentials in the State, to further create job opportunities for the teeming youths.
She stated that the purpose of World Tourism Day was to support changes in policy, business practices and tourism behaviour towards the attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals.
The celebration featured cultural display by various troupes and was graced by dignitaries across the State.
