TESCOM BOSS STRESSES IMPORTANCE OF ACCOUNTABILITY

For the School system to grow and meet its objectives, financial engineering and accountability must be the watch words of those saddled with school accounts and records.

The Chairman, Ogun State Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM), Chief (Mrs). Olabosipo Ogunsan, made this assertion at the Annual State Conference of Bursars of Secondary Schools (COBUSS), with the theme, ‘’Internal and External Audit as a Tool for a Perfected Secondary School Accounting System: Bursars Expectation’’, held at Mayflower School, Ikenne-Remo, Ogun State.

Ogunsan described bursars as the custodian of financial books and records, as well as managers of physical assets of the School while stressing the importance of workshops and Seminars as potent ways at equipping them for efficiency and good service delivery.

She noted that, government was making frantic efforts at ensuring that Bursars in the Public Secondary Schools in Ogun State are trained to be more competent in exhibiting professionalism towards proper record keeping in Schools.

The Chairman explained that financial accountability was necessary for the growth and development of school system, adding that, auditing was necessary to provide an unbiased report of any financial statement, as well as increasing the value and integrity of the financial standing of government.

According to her, Internal and external audits in Secondary Schools accounting system are very important for checks and balances purpose, noting that, Bursars are cornerstones for management of resources, saddled with important roles, aimed at improving accountability, financial and non-financial liabilities.

She encouraged them to uphold the virtues of the profession, not to be static, but to remain dynamic, innovative, resourceful and transparent in record keeping, as they maintain cordial relationship with other members of staff in the school.

Earlier in his welcome address, President, COBUSS, Mr. Olufemi Taiwo, said, the aim of the programme was to prepare Bursars ahead of their duties in Schools and to broaden their knowledge with new approach in tackling challenges encounter in the discharge of their duties.
