President Muhammadu Buhari has declared a state of emergency in the Nation’s water supply, sanitation and hygiene sector, saying, the provision of adequate sanitation and hygiene, as well as portable water supply are primarily the responsibilities of States and Local Governments.
Buhari who made the declaration at the launching of the National action plan for the revitalization of Water Supply, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) sector in Nigeria, organized by the Federal Ministry of Water Resources in Abuja, said the Federal Government’s support to States would be based on their commitment to improving the water sector at various state levels.
The President however called on the 36 State Governors to complement Government’s efforts at the center by giving necessary and adequate attention to the water sector, in order to meet sanitation and water supply need in their respective States.
Speaking at the event, the Ogun State Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, represented by his Deputy, Chief ( Mrs.) Yetunde Onanuga noted that, the National action plan in the sector was long overdue and a step in the right direction.
He said the diseases caused as a result of open defecation could be averted through appropriate and adequate sensitization programmes and awareness campaigns, reiterating his administration’s commitment to improving the water sector towards ensuring wellbeing of the people of Ogun State.
The General Manager, Ogun State water Cooperation, Engr. (Mrs.) Monsurat Agboola lauded the Federal government’s initiatives, noting that the State Government was ready contribute its quota so as to achieve the goals.
