The Ogun State Government will continue to sustain the policy of catering for the vulnerable by imbibing the benefits of nutrition through the Home Feeding Programme in the state.
The Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Otunba Dayo Adeneye stated this at the Media Dialogue on Child Nutrition in South West Nigeria, with the theme: ‘’Overcoming Stunting in South West Nigeria,’’ organised by the Ministry of Information and Strategy in collaboration with the United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF), held at Kakanfo Hotel, Ibadan, Oyo State
Adeneye noted that nutrition was germane to human development, as a well nourished generation would engender a socio-cultural development of the society.
The Commissioner lamented the alarming rate of child malnutrition in the south west States, stressing that the media had a unique role to play at sensitising and enlightening the citizenry on the negative effects of malnutrition, especially on the young ones, admonishing the media practitioners to fashion out ways in disseminating the benefits of balanced diet through various media platforms.
He appreciated the State Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun and UNICEF for their financial and moral support.
In her presentation, UNICEF Nutrition Specialist, Akure Office, Mrs Ada Ezeogu, noted that stunting growth began from the womb as a result of maternal malnutrition and health status before, during and after pregnancy, urging nutrition stakeholders not to relent on their efforts at eliminating the scourge.
Welcoming journalists, UNICEF Communication Officer, Mrs Blessing Ecuador, urged journalists to assist in addressing the prevalence of malnutrition in the South Western part of the country.
