The Ogun State Government has called on parents and guardians to work harmoniously with the health workers and teachers saddled with the responsibility of carrying out the ongoing school-based deworming exercise across 10 Local Government Areas of the State, for children between ages five and 14 years.

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health, Dr. Adesanya Ayinde, who made this call in Abeokuta, said the exercise was an opportunity to rid children of worms that could make them susceptible to diseases, revealing that 839, 273 children were being targeted during the exercise across 4,900 schools.

He explained that contrary to insinuations in some quarters, the exercise was meant to enhance the children’s health and help guard against untoward health conditions that might result in absenteeism from school.

Commending the present administration in the State for the timely exercise, the Permanent Secretary urged parents and guardians to make their children available for them to live a healthy life.

In her remarks, the State Coordinator, Neglected Tropical Diseases, Dr. Islamiyat Soneye, who admonished parents to deworm their kids every three months, thanked the parents for their enthusiasm towards the programme, advising them to encourage their friends to avail themselves of the opportunity to prevent infections.

While monitoring the exercise in Odeda Local Government, the Health Medical Officer in charge of the area, Dr. Olusan Oluwaseun, noted that the turn-out was impressive, just as he assured that all schools within the area would be touched.

Dr. Olusan appreciated teachers for their support, which he said had made the task hitch-free, pointing out that children who were yet to be dewormed would be attended to in the coming days.

The  on-going de-worming exercise in Abeokuta South, Abeokuta North, Ifo, Odeda, Yewa North, Yewa South, Odogbolu, Sagamu, Ijebu North and Ogun Waterside Local Governments respectively, commenced on Friday, November 15 and would last till  November 24, 2019.
