Chairman of the National Cotton Association of Nigeria, (NACOTAN), Ogun State Chapter, Mr. Olorunshola Osasona has lauded the Dapo Abiodun led administration for its various Agricultural strides, which has enhanced the operation of cotton framers in the State.

Osasona, who made the submission during an interactive session with the press in Abeokuta, said the provision of 10,000 hectares of land to the Association by the Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun in Iwoye Ketu, Imeko Afon Local Government Area, has lessen the burden of lack of land for cotton farming.

“You need large expanse of land to enjoy cotton farming and the beauty of it is that it should be on cluster and Governor Abiodun has addressed this by allocating 10,000 hectares of land to our Association. This is unprecedented, couple with other benefits we stand to enjoy in the State’s Anchor Borrowers’ Programme”, he said

He noted that with this gesture, some of the ailing cotton and garment industries would be revived and operate optimally, calling for the contribution of other private sector to support government’s intervention in agriculture.

The NACOTAN Chairman recalled that in 2019, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed with all Para-Military organisation, to the effect that materials for their uniforms be sourced locally, thus serving as a motivation for cotton farmers and curtail the reliance on importation of materials.

“The type of cotton we have in Ogun State is the long staple cotton and it is of high quality and we have very fertile land for its cultivation.

“Let me reiterate that with the move of the state government, there is bound to be a revival of our local economy and the possibility of rising to the level of producing from farm to garment after passing through all the Value Chain is in sight”, he said.

Osasona advised farmers that the Covid-19 pandemic should be a wakeup call for them to seize the State government’s various agricultural programmes to expand their trade, appreciating the Ministry of Agriculture for availing farmers such opportunities.

Commenting, Messers Akinyemi Olubiyi from Odeda and Omoniyi Joseph, a resident of Abeokuta, corroborated Osasona’s earlier position on the potential of Cotton, advising the youths to embrace cotton farming.
