Wife of the Governor of Ogun State and President, UPLIFT Development Foundation Dr. (Mrs.) Olufunso Amosun, has been decorated as the First Female United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN-SDGs) Champion in Ogun state, for her commitments towards ending hunger and improving nutrition in the State by the Civil Society and Coalition on Sustainable Development (CSCSD), State Chapter.
Speaking after the decoration at the International Stakeholders Conference on SDG 2018 and Award Ceremony held at the Cultural Centre, Kuto, Abeokuta, Mrs Amosun said the investiture was a call to duty and opportunity for the awardees to invest more on programmes that would ensure reduction of poverty among the people.
She noted that the award would enhance their commitment and determination to support the realization of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations in the State in particular and Nigeria in general, to boost the standard of living of the people.
The Wife of the Governor express her appreciation to God and thanked the organisers for bestowing on them the prestigious honour as UN-SDGs Champions in Ogun State, calling for collective responsibility of all Nigerians to improve the quality of lives of vulnerable people in the society.
“I thank you all for acknowledging our efforts at contributing to the development of the society, particularly the Upliftment of the lives of our people in Ogun State. This award will indeed spur us to do more and contribute to nation building.” She submitted.
In his remark, the Head, Development Planning and Inclusive Sustainable Growth, UN, Dr. Babatunde Omilola, said government alone could not meet the needs of the people, noting that everyone must be involve in realising the zero tolerance of the United Nations to poverty and environmental degradation.
He stressed the need for Nigerians to embrace economic diversification, create more employment opportunities for the youth to eradicate poverty and improve the environment to ensure sustainable development that would take the country out of its current economic challenges.
Also speaking, the Chairman, Board of Trustees, CSCD, Rev. Fr. John Ngoyi, explained that the aim of the conference was to involve all stakeholders in mapping out agenda for the implementation of SDGs in Ogun State, adding that the selected UN SDG champions were men and woman of integrity who had contributed positively to the realisation of the UN SDGs in their various fields of endeavours.
Other awardees included, Mr Tunde Kilani and king Wasiu Ayinde Marshal.
