In its commitment to further formalise community development and cooperatives educational sector, Ogun State Ministry of Community Development and Cooperatives says plan is underway to upgrade the Social Development Institute, Shasha, to a degree awarding institution.
The State Commissioner in charge of the Ministry, Mr. Gbenga Adenmosun, who disclosed this while responding to questions during the Ministry’s 2019 budget defence, before members of the State House of Assembly, said more grant-in-aid would be provided to Community Development Associations (CDAs) for rural and urban transformation.
He disclosed that a total of 11, 560 registered Cooperatives Societies and 7,800 CDAs are operating in the State and they require effective supervision to achieve their set objectives.
Adenmosun, while defending the Ministry’s proposed budget of N695m for the next fiscal year, explained that the sum of N250m would be for capital projects and the remaining N445m would cater for recurrent expenditure, with revenue target put at N15m.
Adenmosun assured that in the coming year, his Ministry would provide more micro-credit scheme to cooperative societies and trade associations, to enhance their business activities, with the aim of facilitating growth and economic empowerment, especially at the grassroots level.
He said the Ministry would mobilise CDAs, Cooperative Societies and trade associations as agents of grassroots development and economic empowerment, noting that more strategies would be evolved towards facilitating sustainable development of communities across the State through people’s participation in governance.
