The new Abeokuta Train Station, under the ongoing Lagos/Abeokuta rail project, earlier located at the Trade Fair Complex in Abeokuta, may again be relocated to a new site at Oba New City, about 6km away from Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital.

The Minister of Transportation, Rt Hon. Rotimi Amaechi stated this after a visit to the project site, together with the Ogun State Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun and Engineers handling the project.

Giving reasons for the relocation, the Minister said the site earlier agreed upon was not suitable, adding that the new location which co-incidentally falls within the new city, being proposed by the Ogun State Government, would enhance rapid development in the area.

According to him, the initial location would lead to demolition of about 2000 houses and the search for a new location was to mitigate the effect of such on residents and families concerned.

Reacting, Governor Amosun said before his administration takes any decision of this magnitude, welfare of the people must be considered to avoid inflicting hardship on its citizenry, saying the new location would be accommodated within the new city project of the government.

He said the report from the engineers handling the project indicated that the old location at Trade Fair Complex, would have led to demolition of more houses, hence the search for the new location where there would be no need to demolish any houses.
