Information officers have been advised to improve on situational public speaking, in order to enhance their productivity and enable them compete favourably with their counterparts in the communication industry.
A specialist in public speaking and Chairman, Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ogun State Ministry of Information Chapel, Comrade Wole Dosunmu, stated this while delivering a lecture on the rudiments of Public Speaking, at the weekly information officers meeting in Abeokuta.
Dosunmu said it was not only expedient for officers to know how to write, but should be able to speak efficiently in the public, noting that, with determination, any officer could be a better public speaker.
He listed the qualities of a good public speaker to include, self confidence, understanding the audience, having knowledge of the topic and having good command of the English language.
The Chairman, while imploring younger officers to show interest, be ready to learn and take to corrections, also admonished them to engage in reading and do more of research, to keep abreast of happenings around, calling on experienced officers in the field of public speaking to train younger ones, as ‘’success without a successor is a failure’’.
