Ogun State Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun has directed that wheelchairs be provided for the use of school-age children in need of it, in public primary and secondary schools in the three Senatorial Districts of the State.
Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Mrs. Modupe Mujota, disclosed this at the 2018 International Wheelchair Users Day Celebration held at Gateway ICT Ltd. Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta,
The Commissioner who was represented by the Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Alhaji Sefiu Rasheed, said the gesture was imperative to avoid confinement, and the aiding of free movement like other children.
‘’His Excellency, Senator Ibikunle Amosun the Governor of Ogun State felicitates with you on this special day to mark the essentials of the wheelchair bound compatriots. He has directed that wheelchairs be provided for the use of needy school-age children cut across public primary and secondary schools in the three Senatorial Districts of the State.’’ Mujota said.
Calling on well-meaning citizens to lend support to people with special needs, Mrs. Mujota opined that such support had potentials to help them make invaluable contributions to societal development.
In his opening remarks, the Permanent Secretary, represented by the Director, Special Education, Mr. Elijah Akinyemi, appreciated the kind gesture of the State government to people with special needs, adding that this had spurred parents who had hitherto felt dejected having children with disability to embrace the golden opportunities offered their children.
He therefore solicited for cooperation from the media in creating awareness through the propagation of issues pertaining to disabilities and persons with disabilities, saying this would help in addressing stigmatization.
Director, Special Needs Education, Mr. Elijah Akinyemi in his welcome address delivered by the Director, Quality Assurance, Mr. Alidu Ashiru, advised them to be steadfast, goal oriented, diligent and focused in their educational pursuit.
