Girls of all ages have been advised to rise up to challenges of life, not allowed to be intimidated, not give room for low self-esteem and never allow situations to demoralize them or alter their purpose in life.
The Wife of the Ogun State Governor, Mrs. Bamidele Abiodun who gave this advice at the commemoration of the 2019 International Girl-Child Day, held at the MTR Hall, GRA, Ibara, Abeokuta, encouraged the girls to pick a lesson from the theme, “Girl Force: Unstoppable and Unscripted”, and remained unstoppable.
She urged them to remain committed to their studies and believe in themselves for a better and fulfilled tomorrow, saying, ‘’the day is to protect the rights of the girl-child, since they constitute a larger percentage in the development of a nation. The girl child should stand out , not allowing situation make her a victim, but to stand out in the inside’’.
Earlier in her welcome address, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, Dr. Oluranti Oladeinde said the day was to reflect on girls’ rights and the unique challenges they faced all over the world, noting that the United Nations recognized the girl child as a potent force needed in the developmental machinery of any nation.
She said her Ministry, having considered the vulnerability of the girl-child, has continued to effectively and actively improve their living conditions as well as that of women through aggressive enlightenment and education.
Oladeinde disclosed that, the theme for the year was chosen to reflect the situation of the world at present and the role that could be played in promoting joy and happiness in the home fronts and the society at large.
The Keynote speaker, Mrs.Adedayo Benjamin Laniyi said ‘’when you train a child, you train a nation and there are ways to train a girl child in confidence and when she grows, she would become an influencer and a deliverer because of what she has been given’’.
Panellists at the event admonished the girl child to always break the silence, believe in themselves, find their purpose, cultivate good character, be hygienic and aspire to soar high in life, while they proffer possible solutions to some of the challenges which include; girl education, puberty, menstruation, rape, assault among others.
